MMRDA To Lead Dharavi Multi-Modal Hub Plan

The Maharashtra Government has named the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as nodal agency for a new Dharavi Multi-Modal Transit Hub that will knit together suburban rail, metro corridors, bullet-train services and both Mumbai airports. MMRDA will shortly appoint consultants to run a feasibility study and craft the implementation strategy.

Under the government resolution of 18 June, the hub will connect Mahim, Sion and Chunabhatti suburban stations with Metro Lines 2B, 3, 8 and 11, extend Bandra-Kurla Complex’s personal rapid-transit system to Dharavi, and provide links to the BKC bullet-train terminus as well as Mumbai’s existing and upcoming international airports. Plans also allow for retail, offices, hotels, restaurants and a convention centre to spur wider regeneration.

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee called the scheme “a vision for inclusive urban transformation, adding that a detailed proposal will follow the feasibility report to maximise modal integration and urban impact.
