Versova-Bandra Sea Link Set for Completion by July 2027
The Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) is expected to be operational by July 2027, with 25 per cent of the construction work already completed. The Rs 181.2 billion infrastructure project—up from its original estimate of Rs 113.32 billion—is steadily advancing despite the complexities of marine engineering.
According to Rajesh Patil, Joint Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the initial foundation and pier work is progressing rapidly. While work in the sea will pause during the monsoon, land-based construction, including connectors, will continue throughout the season.
The project cost has escalated by Rs 67.88 billion due to the relocation of the casting yard from Juhu to Malad and additional outlays for lighting and beautification.
Once operational, the 12.4 km VBSL will significantly reduce travel time between Bandra and Versova from the current 45�60 minutes to under 15 minutes during peak hours.
MSRDC officials highlight several ancillary benefits, including improved traffic conditions, reduced fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance costs, environmental gains, job creation, land value appreciation, and lower commuter stress.
The project includes several key connectors:
- A 2.25 km (2+2 lane) connector at Bandra
- A 2.57 km (3+3 lane) connector at Carter Road
- A 4.5 km (2+2 lane) connector at Juhu
- A 4.29 km connector at Versova, which features a cable-stayed bridge
Once completed, the VBSL is expected to relieve pressure on existing arterial roads, such as Link Road, SV Road, and the Western Express Highway, particularly between Andheri and Bandra.
