Aizawl to Join Railway Network in July with New Rail Line

In a major boost to connectivity in the Northeast, Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is poised to be connected to the Indian railway network for the first time. The Rs 10.5 billion Bairabi–Sairang railway project is set for inauguration in July, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the ceremony.
The 51.38-kilometre line will make Aizawl the fourth northeastern capital—after Itanagar, Agartala, and Guwahati—to be linked by rail, significantly improving logistics, travel, and trade in the region. Implemented by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the line has received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety following inspections earlier in June.
Constructed in four phases, the rail route ends at Sairang, located 20 kilometres from Aizawl, setting the foundation for last-mile road connectivity. Sections between Bairabi, Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang have all been completed. The project overcame steep terrain and heavy monsoons with tunnels, bridges, and robust safety features.
Officials anticipate the new route will reduce transport costs, improve disaster response, and spur growth in agriculture, trade, and tourism. With Mizoram sharing a border with Myanmar, the railway line is also expected to play a role in India’s Act East policy, promoting cross-border commerce.
Local residents and traders have welcomed the development, calling it a “dream come true� after years of road-only access. While the final inauguration date is pending confirmation, preparations are underway for a high-profile launch event.
