Ramco Cements sets up medical oxygen plant in Tamil Nadu

Cement major Ramco Cements, a part of Ramco Group, has commissioned a plant in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 50 lakh to produce medical oxygen.

The plant has been set up at Virudhunagar, around 500 km from Chennai. It can produce 48 oxygen cylinders per day. Each cylinder can store 45 litres of liquid oxygen equivalent to 7,000 litres in gaseous form, the company told the media.

One cylinder can cater to a patient for 10 to 12 hours at the rate of 10 litres per minute. According to Ramco, with the continuous supply of medical oxygen from this plant, around 24 lives can be saved every day.

The medical oxygen produced at the plant would be supplied to government healthcare facilities in Satur, Virudhunagar, Sivakasi, Rajapalayam, and Aruppukottai.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Revenue Minister KKSS Ramachandran and Virudhunagar District Collector R Kannan formally inaugurated the facility at a function recently.

Other cement manufacturers have also stepped up and entered the oxygen supply chain amid the oxygen crisis scenario in India. LafargeHolcim India and its two subsidiary companies Ambuja Cements and ACC Cements, has contributed 200 oxygen concentrators to Delhi to aid the city during the crisis caused by the second wave of Covid-19.
