UltraTech Cement starts civil works across 12.8 mtpa expansion projects

Aditya Birla Group firm UltraTech Cement has placed most of the equipment orders indicating a start of civil work at the sites of its 12.8 million tonne per annum (mtpa) capacity expansion projects.

In December 2020, the company had approved Rs 5,477 crore capacity expansion plans of 12.8 mtpa through a mix of brownfield and greenfield expansion, including five integrated cement plants and 12 grinding units.

The additional capacity is being developed in the swift-growing markets of the east, central and north regions of the country.

Upon completion of the latest round of expansion, the company's capacity will grow to 136.25 mtpa, consolidating the company’s position as the third-largest cement company in the world, outside of China. Commercial production from these capacities is expected to go on-stream in a phased manner during FY22 and FY23.

UltraTech Cement's expansion includes the existing approval for the cement plant at Pali in Rajasthan, in addition to the company's 8.7 mtpa capacity expansion currently underway in Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, which is expected to be commissioned by FY22 in a phased manner.
