Damage Control at Fukushima

Following a request from Japan, Putzmeister promptly sent its concrete machines to cool down the nuclear reactors at Fukushima.

The recent tsunami and earthquake in Japan damaged some of the country's nuclear power plants, and leakage is a serious threat. Fukushima has the most damaged plant at present. To control this, Japan asked Germany for machines that could help shut down this nuclear plant. In response, Germany sent Putzmeister concrete machines for the rescue operation in special aircrafts, Antonov, which feature a wide body.

Putzmeister to the rescue

Putzmeister concrete machines can pump concrete and water to control nuclear reactors. With excellent height and flexibility, these machines can reach all areas of nuclear power plants, where ordinary machines cannot reach. They also have very high pressure and capacity to pump concrete and water. Putzmeister concrete machines do not require any external power source and are run by the truck engine itself.

Among the several machines sent to Japan, the most advanced is the Putzmeister M 70 � the world's largest working concrete machine. These machines were modified to carry out the rescue operations in Japan. Video cameras and radio remote controls were fitted over these machines to enable them to be operated from a safe distance of approximately two to four km. They were covered with thick lead sheets to protect them from radioactive radiations, which can damage their electronic systems.

Putzmeister had also been involved in the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant disaster relief operations in Russia in 1986. Putzmeister is a German company with 14 subsidiaries across the globe. Its Indian subsidiary is located in Goa at Verna Industrial Estate, and its Managing Director is Michael Schmid - Lindenmayer. Putzmeister Goa also makes India's largest and smallest concrete machines � the M 46 and the BSA702D, respectively. Putzmeister makes the most technologically advanced concrete machines in the world and its machines were used to construct the tallest building in the world - Burj Dubai.
