Rajasthan govt requests Chhattisgarh to make its coal blocks operational

Faced with a power crisis, the Rajasthan government has asked Chhattisgarh to speed up the process of bringing its captive mines online. According to the Rajasthan government, the desert state requires at least 15 rakes of coal per day to keep 4320 MW thermal power generation units operational in order to provide uninterrupted and affordable electricity to its nearly eight crore consumers.

Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RRVUNL) chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) R K Sharma says the state has commissioned 4320 MW of thermal power generation capacity at a cost of Rs 400 billion, based on Chattisgarh鈥檚, country's largest producer, committed coal supplies.

Sharma, who was here to meet senior state government officials to take up the issue, said the Rajasthan government is compelled to ration electricity by imposing power cuts for 4-5 hours so that uninterrupted electricity can be catered to the establishments such as hospitals, schools, courts, government offices, fuel stations and transportation among others.
