Amaravati Set to Become World鈥檚 First Fully Renewable-Powered City

Amaravati, the upcoming capital of Andhra Pradesh, is poised to make global history as the first city to be powered entirely by renewable energy, according to state officials. Designed as a futuristic and environmentally sustainable 鈥減eople鈥檚 capital,鈥 the city aims to generate 2,700 megawatts (MW) of power exclusively from green sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.

Spearheaded by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Rs 650 billion capital city project spans 217 square kilometers on the banks of the Krishna River, within the broader Andhra Pradesh Capital Region (8,352 sq km). The foundation stone is expected to be laid this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Planned between Vijayawada and Guntur, Amaravati will integrate smart city infrastructure with clean energy systems to ensure zero fossil fuel dependence, positioning it as a global benchmark in urban sustainability. By 2050, the city鈥檚 projected power demand of 2,700 MW will be met with at least 30% sourced directly from renewables, with further expansion envisioned.

Key green initiatives include:
  • Mandatory rooftop solar installations covering at least one-third of rooftops in all government housing projects.
  • Adherence to green building norms for all major developments, including those in the Amaravati Government Complex.
  • A fully renewable-powered public transport system, featuring the Amaravati Metro and electric bus fleet.
  • Extensive EV charging infrastructure for public and government vehicles.
  • Solar energy harnessed from public parks, walkways, and roadside facilities like bus depots.

This ambitious project supports India鈥檚 national commitment to clean energy and positions Amaravati as a global model for sustainable urban development.
