The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will get its first solar power project at the Sector 39 waterworks.

The floating solar panels would likely generate electricity worth Rs 1.38 crore yearly.

Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) will set up the solar panels. The 2 MWp floating SPV power plant will produce 28 lakh units per annum and will be installed under the capex mode, where all expenses will be borne by CREST.

As much as 70% of the total income or Rs 97.21 lakh will go to the government treasury, and 30% - Rs 41.66 lakh will go to the cash-starved civic organisation.

According to the construction layout plan given by the MC to the agency, the development of a few water tanks is to be achieved by September or October. After that, the place will be handed over to CREST for setting up the plant. The MC has worked out the plan and will present it in a General House meeting for formal permission on Tuesday.

CREST is the company for the execution of several rooftop solar projects in the city.
