India to Lead the World in Green Hydrogen

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, reaffirmed India’s commitment to emerging as a global leader in green hydrogen production and utilisation. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of India’s first hydrogen-powered truck trials in New Delhi on 4 March 2025, he underscored the transformative vision of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) and the nation’s strides towards energy self-reliance.

Shri Joshi highlighted that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has positioned itself at the forefront of the global green energy transition. With a dedicated allocation of Rs 197 billion, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is set to revolutionise hydrogen production, storage, and application across key industries.

Green Hydrogen Mission: Key Milestones & Targets India has already made remarkable progress in green hydrogen adoption, including:

Awarding 4,12,000 TPA of Green Hydrogen production. Approving 3 GW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity per annum. Launching seven pilot projects spanning transportation, shipping, steel, and storage. Publishing 88 safety and scalability standards for green hydrogen integration. Looking ahead to 2030, India aims to:

? Produce 5 million metric tons (MMT) of Green Hydrogen annually. ? Install 60-100 GW of electrolyser capacity. ? Develop 125 GW of renewable energy capacity dedicated to hydrogen production. ? Reduce 50 million metric tons of CO? emissions annually. ? Save Rs 1 trillion in energy imports. ? Attract Rs 8 trillion in investments for the hydrogen economy.

Hydrogen-Powered Trucks: Transforming India’s Mobility Sector The flag-off of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials marks a significant milestone in India’s clean mobility revolution, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and strengthening energy security. Shri Joshi noted that India, as the third-largest oil consumer and fourth-largest crude oil importer, must accelerate hydrogen adoption to lessen its reliance on conventional fuels.

The inaugural fleet comprises three hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, operating on the Faridabad–Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad–Surat–Vadodara routes. To facilitate this transition, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is establishing hydrogen refuelling stations in Faridabad, Vadodara, Pune, and Balasore.

Government Commitment & Industry Collaboration Shri Joshi commended the efforts of Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari, whose leadership has driven innovation in hydrogen-powered mobility. He also urged industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to collaborate in advancing India’s green energy revolution.

With its ambitious green hydrogen roadmap, India is set to redefine sustainable energy solutions, bolster economic growth, and establish itself as a global hub for hydrogen innovation.
