KONE elaborates on the green initiatives taken at its IGBC Gold certified India factory in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. Being a leader in sustainability has long been a strategic target for KONE. KONE factories around the world and in India have taken a giant leap towards this. The Indian Green Building Council has awarded Gold Certification to KONE鈥檚 factory at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai and Platinum Certificate to the office building and cafeteria, both of which were inaugurated in November 2019. The green building project design work started right from the design stage of the factory. Measures have been taken to make the facility environmentally friendly and thereby sustainable. Towards this, preservation of topsoil to avoid soil erosion and to retain the natural nutrients of the soil, sedimentation pits and frequent sprinkling of water for dust control were followed. For construction, wherever possible recycled material and Autoclaved Aerated Concrete have been used. All materials used are certified for UL and FM global approved standards. Guidelines were set for design, considering future needs and requirements. Temperature and humidity control systems, meeting ASHRAE standards 62.1-2010, are provided in all the occupied areas. CO2 monitoring sensors are placed across the occupied areas, which enhance efficiency and productivity of operations. Daylight is captured through windows and roof, enhancing workplace lighting and energy consumption. Electrical Vehicles with adequate charging ports are placed on-site. Highly reflective factory roofs minimise the heat penetration. Towards the usage of renewable resources and carbon neutrality, 1 MW of in-house solar power has been installed, catering to much of the power needs of the facility. Rainwater harvesting is designed in a way to capture rainwater from the factory roof and office buildings. Storm water drains are connected to rainwater harvesting pond. This zero-discharge facility with effluent and sewage treatment plants has plumbing fixtures that are designed for efficient water usage and reduce water consumption. Green belt area has been created with plantations that are draught tolerant and native. Drip irrigation system is employed. The facility has an in-house organic waste convertor. The facility is designed with fire safety and risk mitigation equipment including multi layered fire detection and fighting systems with auto start fire hydrant pumps, beam detector for monitoring smoke and temperature, sprinkler system and fire extinguishers. Thus, the Indian facility has been established taking into consideration eco-friendly parameters in its design, construction and operation and improve quality of life for all stakeholders and sustainability.
