Besides retail, enterprise applications, fintech, food & agriculture tech and travel & hospitality, the Indian startup ecosystem has also made significant inroads into infrastructure in the past ten years.The number of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognised startups today stands at 141,545 and counting, resulting in the country emerging as the third-largest startup ecosystem globally. These startups have helped create over 1.25 million direct jobs. Among 3,607 active infrastructure companies in India, 1,059 are startups, according to data exclusively shared by data intelligence platform Tracxn Techologies with INFRASTRUCTURE TODAY. Top 10 sectors for startups Consumer, retail, enterprise applications, fintech, transportation & logistics tech and gig economy were among the segments attracting the highest funding. Top 10 equity-funded startups in infrastructureThe leaders in the pack include companies engaged in areas as diverse as energy tech, communications, enterprise applications and sustainability tech. ReNew, Vikram Solar and NextTone Communications lead the category.Top 10 startups in sustainable infrastructureThe category includes equipment and systems in transport, energy, water, information and communication technologies (ICT), etc., whose design is based on sustainability principles. The maximum number of startups in this category are working on developing energy tech solutions.Top 10 women-led infrastructure startupsSince the launch of the Startup India initiative in 2016, the DPIIT recognised startups have at least one- woman director on board. The country has launched various schemes to promote women’s entrepreneurship. Presently, there are more than 70 startups with a woman as co-founder. And most of these entities are based in the South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.Funding to infra startupsIn CY2024 to date, Indian infrastructure companies (including mature and startups) have raised `1.22 billion in funding through 33 rounds.
