The Maharashtra government has earmarked over Rs 12 billion to complete pending work and development of another airport terminal at Shirdi. The government has sanctioned Rs 3.64 billion for earlier work and Rs 8.76 billion for development of another terminal and expansion of Shirdi airport. The airport is connected to all major cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Tirupati. It handles over 64,000 passengers every month and most of these passengers are Sai Baba devotees. The sanctioned amount will be spent on beautification of areas adjoining the airport, construction of an entrance gate, reconstruction of the runway, sewage at the airport and land acquisition for construction of houses for security personnel posted at the cargo complex, besides a training centre. The government decided to use the full capacity of the airport by increasing passenger handling capacity. Currently, it can handle only 300 passengers per hour. After developing another terminal, it will be able to handle over 1,200 passengers per hour. With the rapid increase in the number of Sai Baba devotees, the need arose for an additional passenger terminal.
