Centre’s green signal for Pune Metro rail project

The Union Cabinet has cleared the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-I to be built at an estimated Rs 11,420 crore. The 31.25-km project will have two corridors one starting from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate, covering a length of 16.59 km (11.57 km elevated and 5.02 km underground); and the second will connect Vanaz to Ramwadi, covering 14.67 km, which will be fully elevated. As per the detailed project report, the project is scheduled to be completed in five years from the date of commencement of work.

The project is expected to benefit around 5 million people living in the Pune Metropolitan Area. The approved alignments are expected to provide the much-needed connectivity to commuters and would traverse through some of the densest and traffic congested routes in the Pune Metropolitan Area.

The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MAHA-METRO), a 50:50 jointly-owned company of the Central and state government.
