Maris Polymers SA highlights the characteristics of a good waterproofing material.

Maris Polymers SA manufactures polyurethane waterproofing systems. The company is a global leader in liquid applied polyurethane waterproofing materials. The global trend has shifted towards liquid applied waterproofing systems as these are seamless and provide an optimal solution for waterproofing.

There is a constant dilemma while choosing a good waterproofing system. The options are many and the price range is varies from product to product. There is little awareness about the available technologies in waterproofing. A good product if not applied properly will yield poor results, and hence, it is important to choose a trained applicator that is backed by the manufacturer to yield 100 per cent results in a waterproofing project.

Characteristics of a good waterproofing material
Bonding with the substrate: There should be good bonding of the waterproofing material with the substrate, such as concrete, metal, wood, etc.

This is partially dependent on the method of surface preparation too. The bond strength should typically be more than 1.5 N per sq mm tested as per ASTM D 903.

UV stability: The material should be UV stable if the waterproofing system is left exposed. UV acceleration test in presence of moisture tested as per EOTA TR-010. Elasticity: Also termed as elongation, it is the ability to accommodate the movement in the substrate caused due to difference in temperature. Elongation should be minimum 200 per cent tested as per ASTM D 412 / DIN 52455.

Tensile Strength: This endures the failure of the waterproofing system due to crack formation in the substrate. Tensile strength should be minimum 3 N per sq mm tested as per ASTM D 412 / DIN 52455.

Water vapour permeability: The waterproofing material should be breathable, ie, in case of water vapour entrapment below the waterproofing membrane, it should be able to escape through the waterproofing membrane. Minimum rate of vapour permeability should be 25 gm per sq m a day tested as per ISO 9932:91 Resistance to standing water: Most of the waterproofed surfaces are subject to waterlogging or standing water. The waterproofing material should be stable under standing water. Typically, the waterproofing materials are tested for 1 m of standing water as per EOTA TR-012. In addition to the above properties, there could be additional performance requirements such as service temperature, thermal resistance, resistance to root penetration, fire class, rain stability time, etc.

Maris provides solutions to all kinds of waterproofing projects as per specific requirements, focusing on the right product and the best suited applicator trained by them to achieve 100 per cent waterproofing in the projects.
