Several years ago, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) conceived the idea of undertaking the establishment of Rabindra Bhavan opposite Central Park in Salt Lake this year. It has been reported that the piling work has already been completed, as per the initial plan, aiming for a two-storey building featuring a meeting hall, library, archive, auditorium, and conference hall. The authorities intend to hire an agency for the construction of the ground and first floor of the building, estimating a cost of around Rs 30.6 million for the entire project. Civic officials mentioned that modifications have been made to the building plan, which will now be a two-storey structure in accordance with the initial phase plan. A statue of Tagore has been placed in the front area of the project site, and the piling work for the main building has been finished. It has been stated that both floors will be utilised commercially as per the authorities' requirements. The Rabindra Bhavan project, spanning across a 36 cottah land at Salt Lake FE block opposite Central Park, has remained inactive for many years. During the tenure of the former Bidhannagar Municipality, in 2009, the civic authorities proposed the establishment of a Rabindra Bhavan dedicated entirely to a Tagore research centre. Although the state government allocated a triangular plot, it was deemed unsuitable by the civic engineers. Subsequently, a plot was allocated at FE block adjacent to Central Park. The foundation stone was laid in 2010, but due to various reasons, the project faced delays. Following the formation of the BMC in 2015, efforts were made to revive the project. According to the overarching plan, the main centre will feature an auditorium for staging plays written by Tagore and various musical performances. Additionally, there will be art galleries, exhibition rooms, and a library dedicated to showcasing Tagore's works. Provision will also be made for scholars to conduct research work. The civic body is funding the project using the revenue generated from organizing the annual Bidhannagar Mela Utsav at the Central Park fairground.
