The Madras High Court (HC) has ordered the Madurai district administration to commence the reconstruction work of the dilapidated houses in Kanmaipatti village. The government petitioner said that a plan had been prepared, and the work would be commenced after the approval. He also submitted that alternate agreements be made for the current residents to stay in a community hall. The bench of justices, Pushpa Sathyanarayana and P Velmurugan said that steps would be taken to get approval from the district collector in a week, to commence the construction work by December end. The judges also said that necessary steps would be taken to accommodate the residents in an alternate place till work completion. The HC was hearing public interest litigation (PIL) by A Alagu, a resident of Kanmaipatti village. The petitioner said that the houses were constructed by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) about three decades ago. She added that these houses are now unfit to live in as they are in dilapidated conditions. She said that 25 families are currently living in those dilapidated houses and cannot move to another place due to poverty. So, the petitioner sought Madurai HC to renovate or reconstruct the houses.
