The National Green Tribunal has been informed that the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will provide underground sewer connections to around 23,400 houses in and around Ambattur by this year. The sewerage project, which is part of the state government's llamthorum Inaippu scheme, aims to prevent domestic sewage waste from entering Korattur Lake. Residents and industries discharged sewage and industrial waste into the water body's connecting channels, contaminating the lake, which has shrunk to half its original size. A residents' group, Korattur People's Welfare and Awareness Trust, filed a case with the NGT southern zone in 2016. The court ordered that various state agencies involved in the case take action against polluters and find a long-term solution to the problem. Encroachments near the lake and connecting water channels were removed by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Public Works Department (PWD).The NGT was informed that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board is attempting to regulate industrial waste management, and CMWSSB has been tasked with stopping sewage inflow. A total of 62,600 homes are in need of sewer connections, according to the board. Despite the fact that the deadline was set for 2021, work was delayed due to the pandemic and elections. Work has now resumed, and around 5,000 homes have recently been connected. The CMWSSSB told the tribunal that work is currently underway at 23,400 homes, with another 1,400 homes in the area set to be connected once the line construction is completed. The CMWSSB is laying pipes in the Ambattur area right now. The project is in the fund-approval or Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage in the remaining areas.
