TN urges Centre to expedite construction of AIIMS Madurai buildings

Tamil Nadu鈥檚 health minister Ma Subramanian will urge the Central government to expedite the construction of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) buildings in Madurai.
On Thursday, Health minister Ma Subramanian announced that classes for the first batch of 50 MBBS students who have been admitted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai will begin at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Ramanathapuram. The classes will be held in a hybrid format.
Subramanian will meet with Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday in Delhi to urge him to speed up the construction of the college's buildings.
The first announcement about the establishment of AIIMS in Tamil Nadu was made in 2015, and Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the medical college in 2019.
These students will be taught by faculty who have been appointed by the institution on an ad-hoc basis.
Around 183 faculty members, 16 senior residents, 16 junior residents, and 32 non-teaching staff have been approved for the AIIMS in Madurai, according to Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar.
On February 19, however, AllMS Madurai, in collaboration with its mentor institution Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry, issued a call for applications for contract associate and assistant professorships. Faculty members for anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and community medicine were chosen after an interview via video conferencing.
Subramanian will urge the federal government to approve six more medical colleges in the state, one for each of the newly formed districts of Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tirupathur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, and Kallakurichi.
The minister had previously inspected mobile medical vans that the state intends to introduce soon. The state will send out 389 vans, each of which will run at least 40 medical camps in a single day.
