The proposed slum rehabilitation scheme in the Mumbai Aarey colony has been scrapped by the Maharashtra government. Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) chief Satish Lokhande in a notification issued on Wednesday said that the Bombay high court in a 2012 Public Interest Litigation (PIL) had passed an order in 2016 stating that given the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and interim orders passed by the court the slum rehabilitation scheme cannot be implemented in the Aarey Colony area. Therefore, the notification issued earlier has been cancelled. Despite a stay on construction by the high court in May the SRA had stated its intention to declare 32,310 sq ft in the Aarey colony as a slum rehabilitation area. The state dairy development department owns the 66-acre area. When asked about the SRA’s intention Lokhande had then said that the authority had only invited objections and suggestions when there was a court stay. Advocate Zaman Ali told the media that the government should have understood the Bombay High Court order in 2016 itself but the state government has understood it five years later.
