Foxconn Invests Rs 112 Billion in India
Foxconn is investing Rs 112.5 billion to boost its India operations as Apple shifts production from China to reduce tariff and geopolitical risks. The funds will go to its India unit, Yuzhan Technology, based in Tamil Nadu. This follows Apple CEO Tim Cook’s statement that most U.S. iPhones may soon be made in India. Foxconn also received approval to build a $432 million semiconductor plant in northern India with HCL Group. These moves align with India’s push to become a major electronics manufacturing hub through subsidies and strategic incentives.

SAIL May Launch Dedicated Mining Unit
The Union Ministry of Steel may create a separate mining vertical at SAIL to boost iron ore output in line with its expansion to 35 mtpa by 2030. The structure is under discussion and will be finalised with SAIL. SAIL, India’s third-largest iron ore producer, operates 15 iron ore mines. In 2024�25, it produced 33.78 MT of iron ore. Separately, Coal India announced that the listing process for its subsidiaries BCCL and CMPDI has begun, with draft papers to be filed with SEBI soon.

Premier, SAS To Build Solar Wafer Plant 
Premier Energies has formed a 74:26 joint venture with Taiwan’s Sino-American Silicon Products Inc. to set up a 2 GW solar wafer manufacturing plant in India. The facility will slice polysilicon ingots into wafers for photovoltaic cells, combining Premier’s large-scale production with SAS’s semiconductor expertise. The partnership supports India’s Make-in-India initiative and aims to strengthen the local solar value chain. Premier Energies, a leading Indian renewable energy firm, currently has 11.1 GW of manufacturing capacity. SAS, a global leader in semiconductor materials, brings advanced technology and international market reach to the venture.

BEL Secures Drone Defence Deal with Army
Bharat Electronics (BEL) and the Indian Army signed a deal for the Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System (IDDIS), developed with DRDO under the Make in India initiative. IDDIS detects and neutralises hostile drones. BEL also reported Rs 572 crore in new defence orders, including AI solutions and radios. BEL’s Akashteer air defence system, developed under a Rs 19.82 billion contract, successfully intercepted drones and missiles during recent tensions with Pakistan, proving highly effective in real conflict scenarios and enhancing India's air defence capabilities through unified situational awareness and rapid threat response.

Centre to Boost NE Waterways with Rs 10 Billion
The Centre will invest an additional Rs 10 billion in Assam and Northeast inland waterways projects in 2026. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed progress on key projects along the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, with Rs 7 billion worth of work set for completion by 2025. Efforts include building terminals, vessels, and skill development programmes. Feasibility studies for new IWT routes in Mizoram and Meghalaya are underway. The government also aims to boost tourism through projects at Doyang, Noune, and Shilloi lakes, reinforcing its vision to make the Northeast a major maritime hub.
