Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia Inaugurates C-DOT 5G Lab

Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Hon’ble Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, inaugurated the state-of-the-art 5G Lab developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Gauhati University. The event marks a significant milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in advanced telecommunications technology, reinforcing the government's commitment to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.'

India has made remarkable strides in the telecommunications sector, particularly in the successful deployment and adoption of 5G technology nationwide. The government’s vision has driven the development of an indigenous 4G/5G stack, which is currently being implemented in the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) network. This landmark achievement lays the foundation for exploring new 5G use cases and accelerating research into future 6G technologies.

Recognising the increasing need for expertise in next-generation communication systems, the initiative aims to empower engineering students, researchers, and faculty members by providing hands-on experience with 5G networks. With thousands of engineering colleges across the country aspiring to keep pace with cutting-edge technological advancements, the establishment of affordable 5G test labs in universities is crucial for developing innovative use cases, accelerating 6G research, and generating intellectual property rights (IPR).

To address this demand, C-DOT has developed a cost-effective 5G testbed solution tailored for deployment in academic institutions. The newly inaugurated lab at Gauhati University will provide students and faculty with invaluable practical exposure to 5G technology, allowing them to:

Gain in-depth insights into end-to-end 5G systems. Develop a deeper understanding of 3GPP specifications for 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core networks. Explore new 5G use cases and applications to enhance system capabilities.

Lay the groundwork for 6G research and IPR development. The C-DOT 5G University solution comprises a gNodeB (radio), a Core Network, and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The gNodeB incorporates Centralised Unit (CU), Distributed Unit (DU), and Radio Unit (RU) functionalities. Additionally, an Element Management System (EMS) has been provided for seamless configuration and management of the 5G radio subsystems. A comprehensive technical manual will guide students in configuring the system to facilitate a deeper understanding of 5G networks.

The inauguration of the C-DOT 5G Lab at Gauhati University is a significant step in India's mission to become a global leader in next-generation telecommunications. As the country continues to witness rapid digital transformation, investments in 5G and 6G research will play a crucial role in shaping the future of connectivity.

With the government’s push for indigenous telecom solutions, India is set to drive innovation, strengthen its digital infrastructure, and create new opportunities in sectors such as healthcare, education, and smart cities. The establishment of university-based 5G labs will not only bridge the skill gap but also position India as a frontrunner in advanced telecommunications research, paving the way for a robust and self-reliant digital ecosystem.
