Transport Ministry approves funding for flash-charging bus system in Nagpur

The road transport ministry has approved financial support for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to establish a flash-charging-based electric articulated bus system. This pioneering project aims to enhance last-mile connectivity in the Ring Road area and peri-urban regions, facilitating seamless travel from Metro stations to other parts of the city.

The approval was granted just before the model code of conduct (MCC) took effect.

Under the plan, over 30 articulated buses, each 18 meters long and capable of accommodating 130 passengers, will be deployed. “With more than six overhead 600 kW flash chargers at selected bus stops, the system will provide non-stop service on Ring Road, with a frequency of 15 minutes, operating for 16 hours and serving over 8,000 passengers daily, an official stated.

Flash-charging technology allows these buses to be charged in just 15 seconds at bus stops, significantly reducing the lengthy charging times associated with traditional systems.

Ministry sources indicated that the buses will offer global-standard comfort and aesthetics, featuring CCTV systems, overhead storage similar to that found in airplanes, pantries, and vending machines. Additional amenities will include seats with laptop tray tables and charging points.

This bus system promises not only to benefit the environment but also to lower operational costs.
