At the African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) Conference in New Delhi, India’s Vice President, Dr. Jagdeep Dhankhar, underscored the nation's commitment to gender-inclusive governance, rural empowerment, and economic transformation. Dr. Dhankhar emphasised that women's participation in governance is fundamental to addressing inequalities. He highlighted India as perhaps the only country with constitutionally structured women’s representation in governance. One-third of seats in village councils (Panchayats) and municipalities are reserved for women, ensuring their active role in decision-making. He further noted that millions of women are elected at various levels, from local governance to cooperatives, demonstrating India’s efforts to empower women across sectors. Women today are at the forefront of governance, taking on challenges at the village, district, and municipal levels. The Vice President highlighted India's rapid transformation over the past decade across key sectors, including education, economy, digital infrastructure, and basic amenities. He pointed out India’s achievements in: Economic growth, where India has risen from a double-digit ranking to become the world’s fifth-largest economy and is poised to become the third-largest economic power within two years. Massive improvements in basic services, such as electricity, cooking gas, sanitation, and digital access. He recalled India’s financial struggles in the past when the country had to pledge gold reserves to sustain fiscal credibility, contrasting it with today’s foreign exchange reserves of USD 700 billion—a testament to India's economic resilience. Dr. Dhankhar stressed the urgent need to tackle climate change, labelling it a man-made crisis due to reckless exploitation of natural resources. He called for a balanced approach that recognises the planet’s shared responsibility beyond human needs. Additionally, he acknowledged the paradox of technological advancements alongside persistent challenges like hunger and poverty. India, he asserted, is leveraging technology for: Empowering people Reducing corruption Enhancing transparency and accountability Defining Global Stability Through Rural Growth The Vice President concluded by reiterating that rural development, agriculture, and cooperative sectors are key drivers of global stability. He expressed confidence that the AARDO Conference would play a pivotal role in shaping policies that uplift rural economies worldwide. India, he stated, stands as a model for the world, demonstrating the profound impact of progressive governance and rural empowerment in fostering economic and social transformation.
