CISF to Now Head Security at Lengui Airport in Mizoram

The Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) has now been put in charge of security operations at Lengui Airport in Mizoram. This marks the first time the organization has conduct operations in Mizoram, and now leaves Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Puducherry, and Lakshwadeep as the only states/UTs in which it does not operate in.

Lengui, which was previously secured by a joint combination of the Mizoram Police and Central Reserve Police Force, will now be looked after by over 120 CISF personnel, led by a Deputy Commander. The personnel number is expected to expand up to 214 in the coming months.

The decision to deploy CISF personnel was taken out of a desire from the Centre to improve security across aviation hubs. In turn, this will boost traveller confidence, improve tourism, and increase the number of airline operations. Lengui Airport is of greater significance though, because of its geographical location. As it borders both Bangladesh and Myanmar, improving security is a matter of national strategic importance.
