DMRC aims to boost operational speed of Airport Express Line

Prepare for a swift ride as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) seeks to increase
the speed of the Airport Express Line, the nation's fastest urban transportation
system. The distance between New Delhi Railway Station and Terminal 3 of Indira
Gandhi International Airport could be covered in less than 15 minutes by the end of
the following year.
Currently, it takes 20 minutes to travel 19.4 kilometers. Currently, DMRC is planning
a six-month-long gradual increase in train speed, which could lead to the Airport
Express Line operating more quickly.
The Airport Express Line trains only travel at a top speed of 80 kmph, even though
the current sanctioned speed is 90 kmph. According to Anuj Dayal, the principal
executive director for corporate communications at DMRC, instrumentation,
monitoring, and some adjustments are being planned to enable raising the speed to
120kmph.
Although the trains and systems in the corridor are intended to operate at 135 kmph,
this is not the actual speed at which they travel. The DMRC intends to gradually
increase the train speed over the course of six months to see if it is possible to raise
the operational speed of a train to get it closer to that number.
However, passenger trains won't be permitted to go faster until after the monitoring
procedure and subsequent approval by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety.
The SKL 15HF clamps, which are better suited for high frequency train movement,
have replaced the SKL 15 tension clamps, a rail fastening system, as part of the
changes made to achieve this, according to Dayal. Following the replacement of the
tension clamps by three weeks, units to continuously monitor the track would be
installed at various locations for six months.
After replacing the tension clamps, the train's speed will initially be raised to 100
kmph after a month. For at least a month, there would be daily visual inspections.
After a month, the speed will be increased to 110kmph. The train's speed would be
increased to 120kmph in the last step.
Dayal stated that verification measurements would be done on a few sections three
months after the 120 kph runs. The metro body will collaborate with an organization
to continuously track the vibrations, which will be followed by verification
measurements.
