The new Pune airport terminal building will be operational by August 15 2022, cites an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official. The official revealed that the project had been delayed by eight months due to pandemic-related restrictions. About 55% of the work has been completed thus far. A senior airport official said that the project being hampered by current restrictions allows only those who live on the property to work. According to an official with Egis India, the company assisting with the design and construction of the new building, work was halted for approximately 40 days during the first lockdown last year. Another airport official explained that the second wave of the pandemic, as well as the accompanying restrictions, hampered the work even more. Some of the employees have gone home. The work, however, did not come to a halt. But the unpredictability makes committing to anything difficult. The new building is being constructed on the eastern side of the existing terminal building and expects to increase daily flight movements, including international flights. The airport officials intend to complete the construction of all major aspects of the building, including the integration with the existing building, so that flights can begin seamlessly. Construction on the terminal building began in December 2018, and at the same time, a multi-level car parking facility with a ground floor, three storeys, and two basement floors was being built at parking lot number-1 of the airport. According to the official in charge of the parking facility construction, getting the workers back has become a problem, and air tickets have been sent to them to return to Pune.
