Upcoming Sabarimala airport to boast Kerala’s longest runway

The revised techno-economic feasibility report (TEFR) of the proposed Sabarimala airport envisages it having the longest runway compared to the existing three international airports in Kerala.

As per the TEFR submitted to the Civil Aviation Ministry last week, the airport planned at Cheruvally estate in Erumely, Kottayam will have a 3,500-metre long and 45 m wide runway, with 7.5 m of shoulders on either side. The existing runways at Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi are 3,400 m each and that at Kannur airport is 3,050 m with a provision for extending it up to 4,000m.

The number of passengers (domestic and international) who would use the airport is estimated at 16.9 lakh in 2026, which will grow to 32.9 lakh in 2035 and reach 64.2 lakh in 2052. The passenger forecast per air traffic movement in 2026 is 11,998 passengers, which would rise to 23,210 in 2035. On the cargo side, the airport would handle 4.45 metric tonnes of cargo in 2026, which will reach 7.85 metric tonnes in 2035.

The project cost has been estimated at Rs 3,900 crore, while revenue from the aero and non-aero commercial activities of the airport would be Rs 237 crore in 2030 and grow to Rs 1,969 crore in 2052.
