BMC Uses Reactive Asphalt to Repair Potholes in Khar

The reactive asphalt method, which was utilized to repair potholes in Khar for the first time, was said by the BMC to have been successful. Following its "success," the city body's chosen company, Ecogreen Infra Development, has given reactive asphalt material to each of the 24 civic wards.

Iqbal Singh Chahal, the director of the BMC, and Additional Municipal Commissioner P Velrasu have given orders to all concerned engineers to use this technology to repair the potholes that litter the roadways of Mumbai.

Every monsoon, the local authority faces harsh criticism for its 'poor' road management. The BMC began repairing potholes and filling craters with reactive asphalt mix in the H-East ward (Khar) as a test initiative to address the ongoing problem. It was asserted that the combination takes little time to set in and that after two hours traffic can be allowed to flow through the patch that has been repaired.

Reactive Asphalt

The BMC described reactive asphalt as a sort of asphalt blended with chemicals and gravels, which gives it more strength than regular asphalt, among other characteristics of the technology. The civic authority continued, "It has also been observed that after using this mixture, no complaints against potholes have been received from the citizens."

Rapid hardening concrete and cold mix are two other techniques used in addition to reactive asphalt to fill potholes. Cold mix is used to fill craters six meters deep, whereas rapid hardening requires a dry surface and six hours to set. The BMC has so far given the wards 1,300 metric tonnes of cold mix.

In addition to the 2,000 km of roads, the civic organization is now in charge of maintaining the Eastern and Western Express Highways as well as the Eastern Freeway, which were formerly under the control of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. Only 900 km of roads have been converted to cement concrete walkways thus far.
