The Delhi Transport Department has requested the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to construct a terminal in South Delhi, complete with an integrated commercial development area, replacing the current bus depot and terminal.The total area designated for this project is 15,749 square meters. Of this, a five-story bus depot covering 7,735 square meters will be built, while the remaining 8,014 square meters will be reserved for a future bus depot.Transport officials have outlined that the facility, spanning 17,225 square meters across five floors, will provide parking space for 472 cars and accommodate over 120 buses. Given the government's objective to convert 80% of its bus fleet to electric vehicles in the coming years, the terminal will incorporate a significant number of charging ports.The basement of the terminal will serve as parking space for depot staff and visitors to the commercial area.The Delhi government had previously announced the redevelopment of its depots into multi-story terminals offering airport-like facilities during the 2023-24 budget presentation.A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the transport department and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to execute this project through a public-private partnership.While the Delhi Transport Corporation and the transport department had previously considered converting existing depots into multi-story terminal buildings with provisions for hotels, food courts, and offices, concrete steps in this direction have only recently been initiated.In addition to the South Delhi terminal, two more bus depots, Vasant Vihar and Hari Nagar, are also undergoing redevelopment into multi-story terminals.For the project, the department has engaged NBCC India Limited, a central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The designs for both terminals have been finalised, and tenders were issued earlier this year to select a contractor for construction.Officials have stated that the redevelopment of these terminals is planned in a way that they can sustain themselves financially, with revenue generated from the sale of shop spaces covering the depot construction costs.Currently, the department operates 63 depots, comprising 23 for cluster buses and 40 for DTC vehicles. Additionally, the department has signed a memorandum of understanding to redevelop three inter-state bus terminals at Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, and Anand Vihar.
