To ease traffic congestion in the heart of Mandya city, on Bangalore-Mysore main road, the Karnataka government has been requested to construct a seven-km flyover from the entry point of Mandya city up to the exit point, the State Housing Minister MH Ambareesh said on July 7. He said that the proposed flyover is likely to cost around Rs 317 crore. During peak hours, it takes not less than 45 minutes to cross Mandya on the main road.

The actor-turned Minister said that he is optimistic that the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may approve the project as it does not involve acquisition of any wet land. Ambareesh, who is also Mandya district minister, said the Outer Ring Road project, which would cost around Rs 170 crore, is not feasible since the State has to acquire a lot of wet land in and around Mandya city.

The proposed flyover project can be completed in two to three years, he said, adding the preparation of detailed project report and other preliminary works will be done after the government’s approval. Ambareesh said a parallel road was required between Bangalore and Mysore due to the surge in traffic.

The six-lane road from Mysore to Bangalore mooted by Public Works Minister HC Mahadevappa may not help ease traffic. Hence, the solution is another road between Bangalore and Mysore either by the government or by any private agency, he said. This would also ensure further development of Mysore, the cultural capital of Karnataka.
