BMC plans watchtower at Girgaon Chowpatty

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced its intention to construct a watchtower near the entrance of Girgaon Chowpatty. Civic officials revealed that citizens and tourists would be able to enjoy an unobstructed view of the Arabian Sea from this watchtower.

Additionally, it was revealed that a new road overbridge would replace the recently demolished Ambalal Patel road overbridge (ROB) at Marine Lines. This new overbridge would also feature an extended skywalk for pedestrians, which would connect to the watchtower.

The idea of erecting a watchtower was suggested by Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister, during one of his inspections at the chowpatty.

The watchtower will be accessible directly via a skywalk that intend to create as an extension of the new ROB. It will provide citizens with an unobstructed view of the sea and will be equipped with all modern amenities.

The civic body's bridges department recently demolished the 70-year-old Ambalal Patel ROB, also known as Patel Bridge, located near Girgaon Chowpatty, due to its deteriorating condition. The new ROB will be constructed in its place.

Officials elaborated that the three-story tower would include ramps for individuals with disabilities and an elevator. It would feature a seating area, as well as a section dedicated to retail outlets and a food court. The project is designed to enhance the existing infrastructure of the city's beaches to attract tourists. The project's cost is currently under consideration.
