BMC requests SC to vacate the Coastal Road for resuming construction

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) requested permission from the Supreme Court to move forward with "other development works" on its recently recovered Coastal Road land.

This includes the creation of gardens, parking lots, landscaping, and "associated activities," all of which are currently prohibited by an order issued by the Supreme Court on December 17, 2019. The SC had then permitted the BMC to proceed with recovering the site but had halted any further construction.

The SC had already rejected the BMC's bid to have this judgement vacated in order from October 2020. The BMC has submitted a new request, stating that "building of certain segments of the road is required to be completed concurrently with the other development activities," even though 107 of the 111 hectares of projected reclamation are already complete. Notably, one of these projects is the development of a 1,864 vehicle capacity underground parking garage at Haji Ali.
