The BMC has issued a tender, calling for contractors to undertake the design and construction of a bridge connecting Madh and Versova. Earlier this year, on January 17, the civic bridges department had obtained Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearances for the construction of this connector. The projected cost of this undertaking is estimated at Rs 18 billion. In addition, tenders have been extended to solicit contractors for the design and construction of an elevated road to establish east-west connectivity over Khar subway in the west and Bandra terminus in Bandra east. The anticipated contract cost for this initiative is Rs 13 billion. The construction duration for both projects is around three years each. Specifically, the Madh-Versova bridge contract period is 36 months, and the Khar subway to Bandra connector is 42 months, both of which encompass monsoon months. The proposed bridge between Madh Island and Versova aims to provide direct connectivity between these two locations. Currently, there is no existing road connectivity, necessitating people to rely on ferries. The civic body envisions a 600-meter cable-stayed bridge with a mandatory span of 300 meters over Versova creek. Concerning the Khar subway to Bandra connector, Trivan Karnani, a lawyer and spokesperson for the social media handle @MNCDFBombay, a citizens welfare forum, stated that the planned road should facilitate an exit towards the Western Express Highway. He emphasized that only then would it contribute to reducing traffic at the subway, as the encroachments on the east side of the subway have created a chaotic traffic situation. Pre-bid meetings for both projects are scheduled for March 13, with the tender deadline set for March 20. In addition to the Madh-Versova bridge, the BMC has secured Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearances this year for the construction of two other projects in the western suburbs. One of these involves building a bridge at Marve road in Malad, with permission granted on January 5. The other project entails constructing a vehicular bridge behind Bhagat Singh Nagar across the Goregaon creek, receiving permission on January 5. Tenders for the construction of these two projects are yet to be issued.
