The central government has given its approval for the implementation of a precast concrete policy in the construction of national highways, with the goal of promoting the development of affordable and long-lasting infrastructure throughout the country. This policy change aims to expedite the construction of national highways, bridges, and road-over bridges (ROBs), while minimising the disruptions caused by monsoon seasons. Furthermore, it will address concerns regarding air pollution associated with on-site construction activities. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has requested input from stakeholders on the National Highway Precast Concrete Policy until May 31. Once the feedback is received, the policy will be implemented within the highway sector. According to the new policy, construction companies will be required to obtain precast concrete materials from manufacturers rather than establishing their own yard factories near project sites. These materials should be sourced from factory yards located 100 kilometers away from the project site. However, manufacturers must ensure timely delivery and fixed pricing. Alternatively, construction companies may establish their own yards if they can demonstrate that the costs are lower than using precast concrete technology. The final decision regarding this matter will be made by the respective engineer and officer in charge. The utilisation of precast concrete technology offers several benefits, including cost-effectiveness and accelerated construction processes. It allows for the creation of high-quality, all-weather concrete structures, leading to reduced carbon emissions and improved consistency. The adoption of precast concrete technology is expected to expedite highway projects while also providing a boost to the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.
