Coimbatore corp hands over 11 roads to state highways department

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has handed over 11 roads measuring 41 km to the state highways department for maintenance as it is facing a fund crunch.
The civic organisation, which stretches over 257 sq km area, has 2,700 km roads in 100 wards. The roads link major roads controlled by the national highways and state highways. As the corporation is going through a financial crunch, most roads are in a bad shape. Potholes are filled with stones, which does not guarantee durability.
Against this backdrop, the state highways department wrote to the corporation asking approval to bring some of the roads under its charge for maintenance. On August 31, the corporation council meeting led by Raja Gopal Sunkara, corporation commissioner, sanctioned the request.
The civic organisation has handed over the stretch from Nava India Signal to Mettupalayam road (through Chinnasamy road, 100 ft road and Sivananda colony) (4.70km), from the collectorate to Avaramapalayam (through the Government Polytechnic College For Women and Sathy Salai), on Avinasi road from Fun Mall to Trichy road (3.2km), ThaneerPandal road from Avinashi road to Vilangurichi Junction, from Trichy Road to Vellalore Noyyal Bridge, from Jenneys Residency (Ganapathy road) to Sakthi Salai (6.6km), from Ukkadam (Bypass Road) to Sivalaya Junction, from Ponnaiyarajapuram Ramamoorthy road to Palakkad road (Kuniyamuthur), Pollachi road from Sidco to Sugunapuram in Pollachi Road), from Puttuvikki road to Sundakkamuthur Road (Kovaipudur) and Sanganur Road from Sathy road to Mettupalayam road.
An official told the media that it is the first such arrangement made by the corporation.
Recently, the civic body had cancelled projects worth crores of rupees citing a fund crunch.
