Delhi Becomes India's Electric Bus Leader

In a significant step toward promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly urban transportation, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena jointly inaugurated 400 new electric buses in Delhi.
This addition brings the total count of electric buses in Delhi to 800, making it the city with the largest fleet of electric buses in India.
The Delhi government has placed orders for a total of 1,500 electric buses, with 921 of them receiving subsidies under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) scheme. These 921 buses are estimated to incur an operational cost of Rs 40.91 billions over 12 years. The central government is providing Rs 4.17 billions in FAME subsidies, while the Delhi government is covering Rs 36.74 billion.
The remaining 579 buses will be fully procured and operated by the Delhi government, with 90 percent of the total cost funded by the Delhi government and 10 percent through central government's FAME subsidies.
With this development, Delhi's bus fleet now comprises a total of 7,135 buses, consisting of 4,088 buses under the Delhi Transport Corporation and 3,047 under the DIMTS (Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System). Out of these, 800 are electric buses, marking a significant milestone in the city's efforts to combat air pollution and reduce its carbon footprint.
These 800 electric buses are expected to annually save approximately 45,000 tons of CO2 emissions, contributing significantly to a greener and cleaner Delhi.
In anticipation of this extensive electrification of the bus fleet, 70 depots are currently undergoing electrification to accommodate over 8,000 electric buses by 2025. As of now, eight depots are already fully electrified and operational, with others in various stages of development. The Delhi government has allocated more than 1,500 crores for depot electrification, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainable urban transportation for the foreseeable future.
