The Delhi government has approved a budget of Rs 724.3 crore for two new flyovers. The first flyover is to be constructed between Anand Vihar ISBT and Apsara border in the east and the second one is to be constructed between Punjabi Bagh and Raja Garden in the west. Both the flyovers will provide relief to commuters at the receiving end of frequent snarls in the wake of a significant rise in the number of private vehicles.

While the Raja Garden-Punjabi Bagh link connects south Delhi, Gurgaon and other parts of NCR with north Delhi, the Apsara border stretch, due to its proximity to Noida and Ghaziabad and the presence of an ISBT and a railway station at Anand Vihar, also sees heavy traffic load throughout the day.

While infrastructure works on the Punjabi Bagh-Raja Garden corridor will cost Rs 352.3 crore, the Anand Vihar-Apsara border project will entail an expenditure of a little over Rs 372 crore.

The construction agency will turn the Club Road flyover into a six-lane one from the current two and build a separate six-lane elevated corridor connecting it with ESI Hospital along Ring Road. The project will also see widening of the Moti Nagar flyover from two to six lanes to allow traffic movement in both directions, apart from shifting of ESI Hospital subway ramps, construction of footpaths, strengthening and beautification of roads.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the expenditure finance committee, which is headed by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

As per reports, lakhs of commuters will benefit from the construction of the two flyovers, which will eliminate traffic problems by increasing the capacity of the existing roads and making them safer.
