Putting an end to lingering uncertainties, the highly anticipated flyover initiative at the busy Enchakkal junction on NH 66 bypass in the capital is poised to shift from a mere concept to a concrete reality. Insiders closely connected with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have intimated that the Central government is on the verge of granting financial approval for the construction of the flyover, with an estimated cost of Rs 750 million.The critical financial green light for this endeavour is presently pending authorisation from the Central government. We hold an optimistic outlook regarding its endorsement in the forthcoming month. Upon obtaining the necessary clearance, we will swiftly initiate the tender process, expediting the route to commence construction within a span of two months, conveyed a senior NHAI official.The Enchakkal flyover undertaking achieved a significant milestone in February when the NHAI headquarters in New Delhi sanctioned the Detailed Project Report (DPR). As per the DPR, the proposed four-lane flyover will comprise nine spans, each spanning a length of 25 meters.The inception point of the flyover is the terminus of the Chackai flyover, extending to the juncture where the Muttathara overpass links up with the NH66 bypass. This area has been grappling with substantial traffic congestion, intensifying the public demand for the creation of a flyover at this crucial junction. The initiative aims to facilitate smoother vehicular movement from Kovalam, Shankhumukham, and Vizhinjam to the city center, concurrently mitigating congestion at this pivotal crossroads.Nestled along the bustling Kazhakootam-Mukkola NH corridor, the junction serves as a converging point for roads branching out from East Fort, Vallakadavu, Attakulangara, and Pettah-Enchakkal. A previous proposal by NHAI for an underpass was eventually discarded due to opposition from local traders.
