The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has approved 7,513 road-related projects under its purview during this fiscal year 2022�2023 at a staggering cost of Rs 19.47 billion in order to guarantee commuters a smooth and incident-free ride on city roads. Out of the 7,513 road-related projects that were approved, the GHMC has so far been able to complete 2,219 of them, costing Rs. 4.58 billion. The remaining 5,294 projects, which will cost Rs. 14.88 billion, are in various stages of completion. 9,013 kilometres are the total length of roads that the GHMC maintains, of which 2,846 kilometres are BT roads and 6,167 kilometres are Cement Concrete (CC) roads. The Telangana government granted administrative sanction of Rs 18.39 billion for their maintenance and launched the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme in order to improve travel conditions on the main roads, which account for 811.96 km of the total road length in GHMC limits. In accordance with this programme, the CRMP agencies were given the duty of keeping the entire main road stretches in drivable condition for five years. Over 690 km of the 811.96 km main road network have already had new carpet installed by CRMP agencies. According to the contract, the CRMP agencies are also in charge of maintaining the central medians, sanitation, the development of greenery, and kerb painting on major roads, according to senior GHMC officials. In the meantime, the GHMC has decided to lay Vacuum Dewatered Cement Concrete (VDCC) roads rather than regular bitumen roads in order to prevent rainwater stagnation and to ensure the longevity of the roads that frequently become waterlogged during downpours. With a budget of Rs 1.58 billion for this fiscal year, the GHMC proposed 146 km of vacuum dewatered cement concrete (VDCC), and construction is already in progress in a number of locations.
