The municipality of Jalpaiguri submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 6 crore to the state's Department of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs for the renovation of roads.
The municipality had identified the need for road renovations in various wards within its jurisdiction. The renovation work would commence through a tender process after receiving approval from the department.
According to the 2011 census, Jalpaiguri Municipality covered an area of 12.97 square kilometres and had a population of 108,700 residents in its 25 wards. However, according to the authorities, the current population was approximately 200,000.
The quality of roads in the municipality had deteriorated due to increased traffic. Although significant road repairs had been completed before the municipal elections in 2021, certain wards still required more road work.
Sandeep Mahato, the chairman-in-council of Jalpaiguri Municipality, said that a tender worth Rs 1.44 crore had been awarded the previous week for the construction of seven roads. Additionally, some work had been carried out through the 'Paray Paray Samadhan' programme.
He also said that several road constructions had been carried out recently in ward no. 9, 10, 14, 7, 5, and 19, among others, with a budget of Rs 6.5 crore. However, he added that there was still a need for the renovation of certain roads.
Mahato said that a list had been prepared, marking those roads. He also said that a DPR worth Rs 6 crore had been prepared and sent to the Department of Urban Development for the construction of those roads.
He added that the work would be carried out through a tender process based on the availability of funds from the department by following the allocated budget.
