Mizoram Governor General (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh has directed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) to expedite the widening work of National Highway-306, a crucial route connecting Mizoram and Assam. The highway sustained significant damage during the previous monsoon season, leading to severe disruptions, including protests from truckers.
During a visit to Kolasib district, which borders Assam, Singh reviewed the progress of the repairs and highlighted the on-going difficulties faced by local residents due to delays. With compensation and forest clearance matters largely settled, he emphasized the need for NHIDCL to accelerate construction, considering the state's limited period of favourable weather conditions for infrastructure work.
The NH-306, particularly the Aizawl-Kawnpui stretch, also known as NH-6, serves as a vital link between Mizoram and Silchar in Assam, playing a key role in regional transportation and economic activities. Efficient restoration of this highway is essential for ensuring uninterrupted connectivity and supporting trade and mobility in the region.
Beyond infrastructure concerns, Singh also addressed the rising issue of drug abuse among the youth in Mizoram. He underscored the urgency of implementing measures to combat this growing problem and acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement agencies in tackling drug trafficking. Additionally, he stressed the importance of effectively utilizing central government welfare schemes in Mizoram to enhance development and social well-being.
The directives given during the visit aim to ensure faster progress in infrastructure development while also focusing on broader social issues affecting the state. With improved road connectivity and strengthened anti-drug initiatives, Mizoram seeks to overcome its current challenges and drive sustainable growth.
