Nariman Point-Colaba sea link: MMRDA finalises plan

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finalised a plan for the 1.6 km sea link project that will connect Nariman Point to Colaba.

A traffic survey report was submitted to MMRDA by infrastructure development company Lea Associates in 2005-2008. It had recommended the construction of a bridge connecting Nariman Point to Colaba.

Currently, for travelling on this route, only single-lane Captain Prakash Pethe Road is available, and as a result, heavy traffic congestion is reported on the route on a daily basis.

MMRDA told the media that it has appointed a project management consultant, which will prepare a detailed project report (DPR), suggest alignment, conduct a traffic survey, and study the necessary permissions required for carrying out the project. The consultant will also undertake the tendering process and calculate the estimated cost.

The sea is patrolled by the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy. Environmental clearance will be required, too, as there may be some reclamation involved, besides the work can endanger marine life.

The 2+2 lane connector may originate from near NCPA and connect Cuffe Parade. This connector will ensure the completion of an effective ring road around the Mumbai Island road.

The link will also provide connectivity to Mumbai Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) underground corridor.
