NHAI proposes flyover to alleviate Vijayawada's traffic woes

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to embark on a significant infrastructure endeavour by proposing the construction of a 6.5 km flyover on NH-16, spanning from Bharathi Nagar to Nidamanuru. The primary aim of this mega project is to provide a sustainable solution to the persistent traffic congestion in Vijayawada. The flyover will be an extension of the existing Benz Circle flyover.
Although NHAI's prior flyover construction from Skew Bridge Junction to Bharati Nagar at Benz Circle successfully mitigated peak-hour congestion, it inadvertently exacerbated traffic issues at various key points, including Mahanadu Road, Ramavarappadu Ring, Ramavarappadu Junction, Prasadampadu, Enikpadu, and Nidamanuru. This prompted repeated pleas from Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) and the city police for the construction of underpasses at critical junctions between Bharathi Nagar and Nidamanuru. In response, NHAI has proposed the 6.5 km flyover to bring a lasting solution to the traffic challenges faced on NH-16 within the city.
The detailed project report (DPR) for this ambitious endeavour has been submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport for necessary approvals and funding. However, the potential land acquisition required for the project has raised concerns among residents along NH-16 at various points such as Ramavarappadu, Prasadampadu, and Enikepadu.
In the meantime, the Chanumolu Venkata Rao flyover on the outskirts of the city is grappling with maintenance neglect. The flyover, which once played a vital role in regulating city traffic and was inaugurated in 2011, has fallen into disrepair. The deteriorated road surface, punctuated by potholes and exposed iron rods, poses dangers to motorists, especially during rainy conditions. Despite minor repairs in 2021, the flyover has not undergone substantial maintenance for nearly two years.
