NHAI Uses AI and Drones to Detect 1,000 Encroachments on Highways

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology to detect approximately 1,000 encroachments on four major national highways. This initiative aims to address obstacles that hinder road construction projects and ensure their timely completion.
The survey covered a span of about 360 kilometres, utilising high-frequency drones to capture detailed aerial images of the highways. AI-driven algorithms analysed these images to identify potential encroachments, including parked vehicles, construction materials, and makeshift structures. Following the identification process, NHAI is coordinating with local authorities to remove these obstructions and facilitate uninterrupted infrastructure development.
The aerial survey revealed varying numbers of encroachments across different highway sections. The Indore-Dewas section of NH 52 recorded 47 encroachments, while the Indore-Gujarat stretch of NH 47 reported 448 cases. The Indore-Khalghat section of NH 52 accounted for 480 encroachments, and the Indore-Maharashtra section of NH 52 identified 15 instances of unauthorised occupation. These findings underscore the scale of encroachment issues affecting highway construction.
The use of drones has significantly improved the speed and accuracy of encroachment detection. The technology involves deploying high-frequency drones from a moving vehicle along the highway to capture images, which are then analysed to distinguish potential obstructions. While this method effectively detects objects such as parked vehicles and temporary structures, a follow-up physical survey is necessary to confirm and validate the findings.
The application of AI and drones in infrastructure projects presents a modernized approach to managing large-scale road construction challenges. By leveraging these technologies, NHAI can efficiently identify and address barriers, enhancing the overall quality of road infrastructure.
