The Noida Authority has announced a comprehensive 鈧8 crore safety upgrade for the 24-kilometer Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, aiming to enhance road safety and reduce accidents. This initiative follows a detailed survey that identified several safety deficiencies along the expressway.
Key Features of the Safety Upgrade
8. Enhanced Signage and Reflectors: Installation of new signboards and solar-powered reflectors to improve visibility, especially during nighttime and adverse weather conditions.
9. Fresh Lane Markings: Application of durable thermoplastic paint for clear and long-lasting lane demarcations.
10. Speed Management Measures: Implementation of speed limit signs and rumble strips at exit points to encourage safe driving speeds.
11. Improved Road Infrastructure: Addition of bollards to separate lanes safely and ensure orderly traffic flow.
The upgrade work is scheduled to commence from Sector 14A and will cover the entire stretch of the expressway, with tenders open for application until May 15, 2025.
The decision for this overhaul comes in the wake of a tragic accident on August 14, 2024, where three students lost their lives after their car collided with a pole and a crash barrier. Subsequent inspections revealed missing cat-eye reflectors, unclear entry and exit signage, and faded lane markings, all contributing to hazardous driving conditions.
A survey conducted by the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (RCUES) further highlighted the absence of essential safety features, including proper lane markings, reflectors, and signboards. The survey also noted the lack of kilometre markers, making navigation challenging for unfamiliar drivers.
The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway is a critical corridor connecting Delhi, Noida, and Greater Noida, and it also links to the Yamuna Expressway. With the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar, the expressway's significance is set to increase, necessitating these safety enhancements.
By adhering to the safety standards set by the Indian Road Congress, the Noida Authority aims to transform the expressway into a safer and more efficient route for commuters.
