To improve connectivity between Maharashtra and Karnataka, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently announced plans for a new expressway connecting Pune and Bengaluru. Construction on this ambitious project is expected to commence soon. In addition to enhancing convenience for travellers, the expressway is anticipated to bolster export exchange between the two economically vibrant states. According to NHAI, the expressway will span a total length of 700 kilometres, linking nine districts in Karnataka with three districts in Maharashtra. It was further specified that the Karnataka districts of Bengaluru Rural, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Vijayanagar, Koppal, Gadag, Bagalkot, and Belgaum will be connected to Maharashtra鈥檚 Sangli, Satara, and Pune districts. The eight-lane expressway is projected to require an investment exceeding Rs 500 billion. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce the current travel time between Pune and Bengaluru from 15 hours to just 7 hours, while allowing vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 120 kilometres per hour. This improvement is expected to enhance travel efficiency and convenience for residents of the connected regions. NHAI also revealed that a detailed project report (DPR) is currently being prepared for the project. Upon its completion, the process of land acquisition will commence. The expressway will include various infrastructure features such as flyovers, overbridges, and interchanges to facilitate smoother travel. The project is expected to begin shortly and is targeted for completion by 2028. It is likely to stimulate economic growth in the region and provide a significant boost to the real estate sector due to improved connectivity and infrastructure. Although NHAI has not yet disclosed the complete plan, it indicated that the expressway might align with Bengaluru鈥檚 second airport.
