Road Ministry targets building 13,813 km highways in FY24

The Secretary, Anurag Jain, announced that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has set a goal to achieve a national record by building 13,813 km of highways in the current financial year. During a press briefing, Jain stated that the ministry is striving to eliminate less than two-lane national highways by 2027-28.

In March 2012, the total length of less than two-lane National Highways (NH) was 25,517 km, representing 30.1 percent of the total length. Currently, the total length of less than two-lane NHs stands at 14,350 km, accounting for 9.8 percent of the total length.

For the financial year 2019-20, the ministry completed the construction of 10,237 km of National Highways, followed by 13,327 km in 2020-21, 10,457 km in 2021-22, and 10,331 km in 2022-23.

As of December in the ongoing fiscal year, the ministry has already constructed 6,216 km of NH, surpassing the 5,774 km constructed in the corresponding period of the previous year.
