The decision has been made by the government to transform NH-316, which connects Bhubaneswar and Puri, into a model stretch. Usha Padhee, the Transport secretary, instructed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to establish the necessary infrastructure to designate it as Odisha's inaugural model highway. In a recent meeting with NHAI officials to address road safety concerns, Padhee requested the NHAI to formulate a plan for the development of the model stretch and to carry out the project promptly. Padhee conveyed, The chief general manager of NHAI has assured that the road stretch from Bhubaneswar to Puri will be developed as a 'model stretch,' with all essential infrastructure provided. NHAI stated that it has already implemented model stretches in various states, each equipped with necessary safety and aesthetic features such as road signage, markings, road furniture, safety items, impeccable road designs, and well-designed junctions with entry/exit points. It was revealed by sources that the proposed model stretch will incorporate CCTV cameras for the identification of traffic violations, proper illumination, drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, plantation and landscaping, the redevelopment of the existing toll plaza at Pipili, user facilities, wayside amenities, and the elimination of black spots to prevent accidents.
