Trichy civic body allots over Rs 42 cr for redevelopment of roads

The Trichy Corporation has sanctioned Rs 42.50 crore to form and redevelop road networks of 49 km in the city. It has identified 89 stretches for development in eight packages.

The civic body has also delayed and postponed many road development proposals. Under the smart cities mission, a proposal to develop smart roads with ducts systems was also a reason for the delay.

It dropped the smart cities proposal but identified road development and relied on 25 wards in four zones. The construction work includes stormwater drains construction, cement concrete roads and minor culverts.

According to an official and senior engineering department, the Corporation has chosen maximum to not overlap with underground drainage (UGD) and water projects. In six months, the civil work for the road development will be executed. Trichy has invited a bid for road development.

As for the proposal, the selection of Thillai Nagar cross streets has been a surprise for many because the locality is to witness UGD replacement work. The corporation officials have said that the road development in such places will be on hold till the installation of the pipe ends. The proposals have 25 new road development, 21 restorations and improvements, 19 construction of stormwater drains, and eight cement concrete roads.

A few residential localities, including Sanjeevi Nagar, Viswas Nagar, Shanmuga Nagar, and Lingam Nagar, were given preferences in the road proposal. A separate package of Rs 5 crore was allotted for developing and widening roads in Panjappur. A resident of Karumandapam, Vignesh K, said that increasing the height of the existing old roads will result in inundation. The estimated cost of the total project is Rs 42.50 crore.
